Hello and welcome to the One Minute Mark.
The hardest part is coming up with a topic. That accounts for probably eighty percent of the entire effort in making this one-minute podcast. Once I have the idea for a topic, I start typing out the words. I type this straight into the New Post page of my blog. I have a spellchecker installed on Firefox, so I correct the most obvious mistakes as I type.
I don’t count words or lines. Rather, I just type until I feel like pretty much fills the box. Then, I make sure that the SingStar microphone is plugged into the USB port, open my podcasting folder, and double click on the Audacity file called “podcast theme”.
Once Audacity is open with this file, I hit record and then toggle back to my browser so I can read what I have written. As the theme music fades down, I start talking. I hold the microphone about two inches from my mouth, and off I go.
Most of the time, I can record the minute straight through. Once or twice a week, I get caught on a particular phrase. If I stumble because of a mistake in the text, and this happens often, I correct the text and then record it again. Sometimes, of course, I simply stumble. Once I stop, I chop of the extra seconds at the end and take out the background noise of me listening to the theme tune.
Once I’ve finished recording, I save the file from Audacity to my podcast folder. The name is simply the year, the month, and the date. Audacity prompts me to name the file and who the artist is. Mostly the name is the same as the episode but sometimes it comes out a little different.
Next, I use an application called Filezilla to load the mp3 up to my webhost. The directory is bookmarked so that’s pretty straightforward. As it uploads, I fix up the date, time, and link to the audio file on my blog post. Mostly, I set it to publish at six the following morning. If you see it later than that, I’m recorded it on the actual day.
Finally, I hit the schedule button in Wordpress, and I’m done.
Anyhow, that’s the minute and I’ll speak to you soon.
