The other week, I did an activity with one of my English classes where I wrote a sentence on the board and the explained it in as much detail as possible in terms of punctuation and grammar. For instance they might tell me that the first world starts with a capital letter because the first word in a sentence required a capital.
I wanted to acknowledge their contributions in some way other than just verbally. I ended up giving them a blank sticky-note of a pad for each valid addition. This works reasonably well, and got me to thinking about what else I could use for this sort of activity.
I mentioned this exercise to another teacher and mentioned that I was considering using plastic poker chips and collecting them at the end. They are so cheap that it wouldn’t matter if they odd kid held on to one. They are also nice and physical and can be thrown to a student.
The teacher in question – I can’t actually remember who is was – told me this was a terrible idea since using poker chips for any purpose glamorises and encourages gambling.
I am not so sure. What do you think?
